A:Nikon 50mm 1.2 ai-s @ 1.2
B:Nikon 50mm 1.2 ai-s @ 2.0
C:Sigma 50 1.4 ART @ 1.4
D:Sigma 50 1.4 ART @ 2.0
These two lenses were tested at their minimum focusing distance, which is about 50 cm for the Nikon and 40 cm for the sigma. The aim was to test the quality of bokeh and center sharpness wide open and at F2. Before the sigma released their new 50mm 1.4, the 1.2 ai-s was supposed to be the sharpest 50mm lens at F2. At 1.2 it was not so easy to manually focus on the subject and even though not shown in these pictures, the corner sharpness was below mediocre. At F2 the Nikon 50 was very sharp corner to corner, and it was easier to focus on the subject. Sigma was also focused manually but since the minimum focusing distance is around 40cm you can see that it is far better at isolating background from the subject. It is sharp wide open, both at center and corners. At F2, both the lenses were equally sharp. It was also noted that pictures from Nikon’s 50 had more contrast than sigma’s and pictures from sigma were slightly warmer.
